DTW Presents Sasa Asentic in the U.S. Premiere of My private bio-politics

MARCH 5-7, 2009 at 7:30pm

In his solo My private bio-politics presented by Dance Theater Workshop, emerging Serbian choreographer Sasa Asentic examines what it means to be contemporary - personally and publicly. Beginning as an investigation of how dance is experienced in transient Eastern European cultures, his solo, My private bio-politics, has grown into a dialogue with the audience as he debates the global expectations of a performing body.  Choreography, text, and performance are by Asentic with theoretical support and dramaturgy by Ana Vujanovic and artistic assistance by Olivera Kovacevic Crnjanski.

Performances will take place at Dance Theater Workshop in the Bessie Schönberg Theater, March 5-7 (Thursday – Saturday at 7:30pm).  There will also be a Post-show Talk with Sara Nash on March 5 (Thursday). Tickets are $26 ($15 for members, seniors, and students) and are available online at dancetheaterworkshop.org, over the phone at 212.924.0077, and in person at the box office.  Dance Theater Workshop is located at 219 West 19th Street, between 7th and 8th Avenues.

About the Artist

Sasa Asentic’s interests are in re-thinking/experiencing the performer’s state of “I am…” through de-sedimentation and understanding of actual reality, current situations in transitional society, and the performing arts scene and through his artistic/social/political (re)actions. He is an author, co-author, and multi-disciplinary performer as well as a self-taught performer.  Asentic studied Agriculture and Pedagogy at University in Novi Sad, Serbia and has led an artistic program for mentally disabled people since 1999.

My private bio-politics is funded, in part, by Dance Theater Workshop’s Suitcase Fund as part of the East/Central Europe Cultural Partnerships Program, with support from The Trust for Mutual Understanding.

Through the international program The Suitcase Fund, Dance Theater Workshop fuels international dialogue and creates a global artistic community. Working with independent artists, producers, and organizations around the world, Dance Theater Workshop supports and produces a variety of different projects each year.
