SYMPHONY SPACE’S 2009 SEASON OF SPRING DANCE PROGRAMMING BEGINS APRIL 2

HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE KEIGWIN KABARET SERIES, DANCE IN HD AND THE DANCE SAMPLER: BLUES IN THE NIGHT

Continuing its tradition of serving as one of New York’s most acclaimed multi-disciplinary performing arts centers, Symphony Space kicks off its 2009 spring season of dance programming on April 2 with the Thalia Dance: Keigwin Kabaret series and continues through April 25 with the annual themed mini-marathon The Dance Sampler: Blues in the Night. Also during the month of April, Symphony Space will unveil new cabaret-style seating in the Leonard Nimoy Thalia featuring table service and light fare and beverages available from the unWINEd Wine Bar & Lounge.

Throughout April, Symphony Space is the premiere venue for innovative dance performance. Over three weekends, the Thalia Dance series will feature performances of critically acclaimed choreographer Larry Keigwin’s Keigwin Kabaret, a fusion of modern dance, vaudeville and burlesque acts performed as site-specific work. Inspired by the backstage events of live theater, Keigwin & Company present smart dances with hints of irony while special guest stars up the entertainment quotient. The New York Times calls the Keigwin Kabaret “a model of well-made dance that was as surprisingly poignant as it was hilarious,” and the Village Voice says, “Larry Keigwin has his finger on our pulse, and his Keigwin Kabaret…dishes up glamour, sex, music, and dance with kinky élan.”

To close out the dance-centered month, Symphony Space will hold its signature dance event on the last Saturday in April, The Dance Sampler: Blues in the Night. This mini-marathon features an extravaganza of performances in a diverse range of genres. The Sampler will spotlight the choreography of 12 of New York’s most distinguished emerging, up-and-coming, and established choreographers including Ronald K. Brown/Evidence, David Parker and Nicole Wolcott, who will present pieces on the theme “Blues in the Night.”

Symphony Space will also team up with Emerging Pictures to present Dance in HD throughout the month of April. Featuring performances by the Bolshoi Ballet and La Scala Ballet, the Symphony Space/Emerging Pictures collaboration presents some of the ballet world’s brightest lights and most celebrated choreographers in a uniquely immersive cinematic experience.

When Symphony Space opened its doors in 1978 with its first production, Wall to Wall Bach, it gathered together an eclectic group of musicians, professional and amateur, well-known and emerging. What began as a natural outgrowth of the cultural epicenter that is the Upper West Side, traditionally home to many of the great actors, writers, dancers and musicians of our time, remains a unique melding of world-class artistry with the informality and intimacy of a neighborhood salon.
