Chen Dance Center (formerly known as Mulberry St. Theater) is pleased to present the first of two weekends in their semi-annual emerging choreographer’s series – newsteps. Introduced in 1994 and presenting the work of over 149 artists, this series was created to support the community of emerging choreographers who are developing innovative and risk-taking works. It has received acclaim in Dance Magazine, The New York Times, The Village Voice, Downtown Express, and The Villager. The choreographers are selected through an open audition by a panel of prominent artists, with this year’s panel including H.T. Chen, Jacqueline Davis, Ishmael Houston-Jones and Rosalind Newman.

This series will feature five premieres from Lisa Crawford, Hsiao-Wei Hsieh & Hsiao-Ting Hsieh, Mana Kawamura, Leanne Schmidt and Company, and GoGoVertigoat Dance Project.

The array of work provided by these inventive choreographers offers something for everyone. Crawford, the Artistic Director of Fringe Tenant, a Brooklyn based modern dance company, has created a bold exploration of movement, space and self in Uterii, a raw journey that folds and unfolds between physically explosive confrontation and a quieter internal focus. Hsiao-Wei & Hsiao-Ting, who both hold a Diploma of Dance Studies from Laban, will present 7:30PM (encounter), which applies Laban’s A-Scale to three original solos, creating a masterful presentation of both simplicity and complexity. A native of Japan and previous presenter at Green Space, 92nd Street Y, Dance Theater Workshop and the Flea Theater, Kawamura will

(over, please)

introduce Specimen, a dynamic quintet inspired by the popular fairy-tale Little Red Riding Hood.

Leanne Schmidt and Company, a group that strives to present dance that is human, vulnerable and accessible, will present The Upper Hand, a tongue-in-cheek approach to examining the struggle for power. Lastly, Ding, a piece exploring how sound and audience participation can alter a choreographic work, will be introduced by Lindsey Drury and eunkyungkim, founders of GoGoVertigoat Dance Project, a company blending playfulness with conceptualism.

Travel: By subway: Take 6, N, R, W, Q, M, J to Canal Street. Walk east along Canal Street towards Chinatown. Turn right on Mulberry Street. Walk one block south to Bayard Street. The Theater is on the northeast corner of Mulberry & Bayard.

ABOUT CHEN DANCE CENTER

Chen Dance Center (CDC) provides an intimate black box performance space created in 1988 with the mission to promote understanding through the arts, provide professional opportunities for artists, increase participation in the arts and develop future audiences. As a co-presenter of independent artists and presenter of two dance series – newsteps and Ear to the Ground - CDC supports the development of dance artists by providing a professional theater space in which artists of high caliber receive visibility in the dance community and press.
